Understanding your gap fee

If you have a valid Medicare card, your gap fee (also known as your out-of-pocket cost) is the amount you pay after your Medicare rebate has been applied.

After your appointment, we'll process your Medicare rebate electronically on your behalf. In most cases, your rebate will be deposited into your nominated bank account within 2–3 business days.

The gap fee shown throughout our website reflects the amount most patients can expect to pay after receiving their Medicare rebate.

GP chronic condition management plans

These are available for patients with a chronic disease once every 3 months.

Chronic conditions such as diabetes, osteoporosis, arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, mental health conditions and obesity often benefit from regular review and coordinated care.

Comprehensive Care Appointments (GPCCMPs) attract a higher Medicare rebate, allowing us to offer longer appointments with a lower out-of-pocket cost than standard consultations.

Medicare Safety Net

If your family's annual out-of-pocket medical costs reach the Medicare Safety Net threshold, Medicare increases your rebate for eligible services for the remainder of the calendar year.

We recommend registering your family with Medicare so eligible expenses are combined.

Frequently asked quesions

Our fees are based on the time you spend with your doctor, rather than simply the appointment type you originally booked.

This allows your doctor to give you the time you need without rushing your care. If your consultation runs longer than the time booked, a longer consultation fee may apply.

Where possible, please book a longer appointment if you have several concerns or something you know will need more time.

Bronte Family Doctors is a private billing practice.

Some appointments may be bulk billed in specific circumstances or at your doctor’s discretion. Certain nurse-led services and government-funded programs may also be bulk billed where eligibility requirements are met.

Please see our current fee schedule or speak with reception if you’re unsure what fee will apply to your appointment.

For most consultations, you will pay the full fee on the day of your appointment. We can then submit your Medicare claim electronically, and your rebate is usually paid directly into the bank account you have registered with Medicare.

The difference between our fee and your Medicare rebate is your out-of-pocket cost, or gap.

The Medicare rebate is set by the Australian Government and is separate from the fee charged by the practice.

We understand that sometimes a consultation takes longer than expected.

If your doctor is able to continue the consultation, your fee will be adjusted according to the actual consultation time. At other times, particularly if your doctor has other patients waiting, we may need to arrange another appointment to properly address any additional concerns.

If you have several issues to discuss, a complex concern or think you may need extra time, we recommend booking a longer appointment from the outset.

Procedures involve more than your consultation time. They may require additional clinical time, specialised equipment, sterile instruments, dressings and other medical supplies.

For this reason, procedure fees may apply in addition to your consultation fee.

Where possible, we’ll discuss the expected costs with you before proceeding. For planned procedures, our team can provide an estimate beforehand so you know what to expect.
