Planning for pregnancy

Ideally, preconception care starts a few months before trying to conceive. Your GP can help you review:

  • Your menstrual cycle and timing of ovulation
  • Folic acid, iodine and other supplements
  • Medications and their safety during pregnancy
  • Vaccinations and immunity
  • Genetic carrier screening options
  • Lifestyle factors including nutrition, exercise, smoking and alcohol
  • Existing medical conditions
  • Cervical screening and other preventive health checks
  • Mental health and emotional wellbeing

If pregnancy is taking longer than expected

If you’ve been trying to conceive without success, we can provide an initial fertility assessment for both partners.

This may include reviewing your cycle and ovulation, arranging blood tests and imaging where appropriate, and organising a semen analysis. We can also help identify conditions that may affect fertility, such as endometriosis or ovulatory disorders.

If further assessment or treatment is needed, we can guide you through the next steps and arrange referral to a fertility specialist.

Starting pregnancy well

Pregnancy planning isn’t only about fertility. It’s an opportunity to optimise your health before conception and make sure you’re as prepared as possible for the months ahead.

If you’re considering pregnancy, you don’t need to wait until you’ve started trying to speak with us. A preconception appointment is a great place to start.
