What is an IUD?

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a small, T-shaped device inserted into the uterus by a doctor to provide highly effective, long-term contraception. IUDs are one of the most reliable forms of contraception available, with a failure rate of less than 1%, and are fully reversible – fertility returns quickly after removal.

Hormonal IUDs: Mirena and Kyleena

Hormonal IUDs release a low dose of progestogen locally into the uterus. Mirena lasts up to 8 years and may also be used to manage heavy periods, endometriosis and as part of hormone replacement therapy in perimenopause. Kyleena lasts up to 5 years and contains a lower dose of hormone. Many people experience lighter periods or no periods at all with a hormonal IUD.

Copper IUD

The copper IUD is hormone-free and works by creating an environment that is toxic to sperm. It lasts up to 10 years and can also be used as emergency contraception if inserted within 5 days of unprotected sex. It may be a good option for people who prefer to avoid hormones. Periods may be heavier or more crampy, particularly in the first few months.

Is an IUD right for you?

IUDs may be worth discussing with your GP if you want effective, long-term contraception without a daily pill; are looking for a hormone-free option; want lighter or fewer periods; are approaching perimenopause and need contraception alongside HRT; or would like contraception that is reversible when you are ready to conceive.
