Weight Management

Sustainable weight loss starts with understanding why

If you’ve struggled to lose weight despite eating well, exercising and doing all the right things, you’re not alone. Weight is influenced by far more than willpower. Hormones, genetics, medications, sleep, stress, menopause, insulin resistance and underlying medical conditions can all contribute.

Individual GPs consulting from Bronte Family Doctors take an evidence-based, personalised approach to weight management. Rather than focusing solely on the number on the scales, your GP will work with you to understand the factors contributing to weight gain and develop a management plan that supports your long-term health.

Why choose medically supervised weight management?

There is no single treatment that works for everyone. A comprehensive medical assessment allows your GP to identify contributing factors and recommend strategies tailored to your individual health, goals and circumstances.

Individualised management

Depending on your circumstances, your management plan may include:

  • Lifestyle and nutrition strategies
  • Investigation for medical contributors such as thyroid disease or insulin resistance
  • Prescription weight loss medications where clinically appropriate
  • Ongoing review, support and monitoring

Who may benefit?

You may benefit from a medical weight management consultation if you:

  • Have experienced repeated weight regain
  • Are concerned about your risk of diabetes or cardiovascular disease
  • Have weight-related medical conditions
  • Are experiencing weight gain during perimenopause or menopause
  • Would like to discuss prescription weight loss medications
  • Are looking for a sustainable, medically supervised approach to weight management

A whole-person approach

Weight affects many aspects of health. Your blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes risk, cardiovascular health, mental wellbeing and overall quality of life are taking into account when developing your management plan. Recommendations are tailored to your medical history, preferences and individual health goals rather than following a one-size-fits-all program.

Frequently asked questions

For the most thorough examination, we recommend wearing comfortable clothing that is easy to remove, as a comprehensive skin check usually involves examining your skin from head to toe.

If possible, avoid wearing heavy or tinted makeup, particularly foundation, BB cream or tinted moisturiser. These products can make it more difficult to accurately assess facial skin lesions. If you normally wear makeup, you may be asked to remove it from areas that require closer examination.

If you have a new or changing lesion beneath a fingernail or toenail, please remove nail polish beforehand so it can be properly assessed. Otherwise, nail polish does not usually need to be removed.

This depends on your individual risk factors. Some people benefit from annual skin checks, while others with a personal history of skin cancer or a higher risk may require more frequent surveillance. Your GP can recommend a screening schedule tailored to your needs.

Many suspicious lesions can be assessed further with a skin biopsy or removed in the practice under local anaesthetic. If a lesion requires specialist management, your GP will discuss the most appropriate referral and treatment options.

A full skin check generally takes around 15–30 minutes, depending on the number of moles or lesions requiring assessment. If you have multiple concerns, please let reception know when booking so sufficient time can be allocated.
