Supporting the Next Generation of GPs in Antenatal Shared Care

We’re proud to share that Dr May Tan recently presented at the Royal Hospital for Women’s Antenatal Shared Care Program induction, helping GPs joining the program develop the knowledge and confidence to care for women throughout pregnancy.

Antenatal shared care allows women with uncomplicated pregnancies to receive much of their pregnancy care with a GP in the community, while remaining connected with their hospital maternity team. It offers the best of both worlds — specialist hospital support alongside the continuity and convenience of care with a GP close to home.

The Royal Hospital for Women (RHW) holds a particularly special place in May’s career. She completed her training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at RHW as a Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) and has maintained close professional and personal ties with the hospital ever since — including delivering all three of her own children there!

May has a longstanding passion for antenatal and newborn care and particularly enjoys supporting women and their families through what can be an incredibly exciting, but sometimes challenging, stage of life. Having a trusted GP alongside you during pregnancy can provide valuable continuity — from navigating the early weeks of pregnancy and routine antenatal care through to preparing for birth and supporting both mother and baby after they come home.

As part of the induction, May shared her practical experience with GPs entering the Antenatal Shared Care Program, including the GP’s role in providing safe, evidence-based pregnancy care and working closely with the hospital maternity team.

At Bronte Family Doctors, we value being able to care for our patients through the different stages of their lives. Antenatal shared care is a wonderful example of this continuity — often allowing us to care for a woman before and throughout her pregnancy, meet her new baby, and continue looking after the whole family in the years that follow.

We’re delighted to see May continuing her connection with the Royal Hospital for Women and contributing to the education of GPs providing antenatal shared care across our community.
