Endometriosis is a common condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. It can cause significant pain and affect periods, bowel and bladder symptoms, sex, fertility and day-to-day wellbeing.
Symptoms vary considerably, and the severity of pain doesn’t always reflect the extent of the condition.

Endometriosis may cause:
There is no single simple test for endometriosis. Your GP will listen to your symptoms and history and may recommend an examination, pelvic ultrasound or other investigations.
Importantly, a normal ultrasound does not rule out endometriosis. In many cases, treatment can begin based on your symptoms without needing surgery to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment is individual and depends on your symptoms, preferences and whether pregnancy is a current or future priority.
Options may include pain relief, hormonal contraception, the contraceptive pill, a Mirena IUD or other hormonal treatments. Some people will also benefit from pelvic floor physiotherapy or referral to a gynaecologist or specialist endometriosis service.
At Bronte Family Doctors, we can help investigate pelvic pain, discuss treatment options and coordinate ongoing care. If painful periods or pelvic symptoms are interfering with your everyday life, please book an appointment to discuss them with your GP.
