Children and teenagers experience emotional challenges differently from adults. Changes in mood, behaviour, friendships, school performance or sleep may be signs that extra support is needed. Your GP at Bronte Family Doctors may assess and manage concerns such as anxiety, low mood, ADHD, school refusal, behavioural concerns, emotional regulation difficulties, social challenges and self-esteem issues.

Parents and caregivers are welcome to provide information and context regarding an adolescent’s mental health. Confidentiality is often essential to building trust, and where appropriate, the consulting GP may spend part of the appointment speaking with the young person alone. If any concerns regarding safety arise, these will be discussed with parents or caregivers where appropriate, after discussing with the patient. Otherwise, information shared during the consultation remains confidential. You can read more in our Confidentiality Policy.

Pregnancy and the first year after birth can be rewarding but emotionally challenging. GPs at Bronte Family Doctors can assist with pregnancy-related anxiety, postnatal depression, postnatal anxiety, birth trauma, adjustment to parenthood, sleep deprivation and emotional wellbeing.

Hormonal changes during perimenopause and menopause can have a significant impact on emotional wellbeing. Many women experience anxiety, mood changes, brain fog, irritability, poor sleep, reduced confidence and loss of motivation. These symptoms are common and deserve careful assessment rather than being dismissed as simply stress or ageing.

Many men delay seeking help because they feel they should simply push through. Mental health concerns may present as stress, irritability, burnout, sleep problems, low motivation, anxiety, depression or relationship difficulties. GPs consulting at BFD provide confidential, practical support tailored to each person’s circumstances.

Eligible patients with a clinically diagnosed mental health condition may benefit from a GP Mental Health Care Plan. During a consultation, your GP can assess your symptoms, develop a personalised treatment plan, coordinate your care and, where appropriate, refer you to a psychologist or other allied health professional. Medicare rebates may be available for eligible psychological services under current Medicare arrangements.

Mental health consultations take time. For an initial discussion, Mental Health Care Plan, ADHD review, complex anxiety or depression, perinatal mental health concerns or menopause-related symptoms, we recommend booking a longer appointment. More than one consultation may sometimes be required.
